Of course not, but it should still be our main priority. This, for now, can be a secondary concern. If Kaname contracts tomorrow it will hardly mean very much.

[she turns around quickly, snapping at the air. Kirika's fists are clenched at her sides.]

...What I would prefer, is that we save as many as possible. Kaname is included in that. Call me idealistic if you will, but that is the ending I am hoping for.

We kill her if, and only if, she contracts. We have an agreement on the matter.

[Kirika keeps her head lowered again, not meeting her gaze, but there's still anger in her tone.]

We aren't doing anything! All we do is fight witches when we need grief seeds, have tea, and check the community. If we're just waiting then you can at least think about what's in front of you!

I won't kill her until you say so but you can't just push aside everything else because it's not important to the 'mission'!

As Puella Magi, we run on borrowed time! It is by playing things conservative we do not run out! Whilst it is true that we cannot monitor Kaname if we ourselves are dead quite apart from that I do not want us to die.

Of course we are! That's why you can't just shove everything that doesn't have to do with Kaname away! People are supposed to have emotions, Oriko!

[for a moment, Oriko can only stare blankly, almost unsure what's she's heard.

Then she stands, expression darkening.]

[Kirika looks taken aback. She didn't mean it like that--she doesn't take out her own soul gem.]

You're my most important person--of course I wouldn't say something like that! [It's just I don't get how you always focus on the mission. Other things are important, too. Why is it that it always seems that I'm being shoved aside for Kaname?]

I just don't get how you can push away everything else for Kaname!

Keeping her alive is my own selfishness, because I would like not to be a killer. I am well aware her murder is the safest course of action.

Do you think me blind?

It all hangs in the balance, Kirika. At this moment, the people who are aware of the danger Kaname can bring are both within this room. Whether the world lives or dies is dependent, quite entirely, upon our own actions.

I am taking risks and gambling with billions of lives that are not my own. I care about that outcome. Of course I am cautious.

If you don't want to be a killer, I can do it. You won't be involved--you could blame me! No one could blame you for it!

If it's such a burden then I'll take it! Would it be nice if Kaname could live? Yeah. It would be. There's a bunch of people who care about her but I would take on all that. I promise.

Just let me prove it!

It hardly matters which of us does it; the point is that without my knowledge it is not a course of action either of us would take. You've said yourself you will do it if asked to, or on my behalf. You are neglecting the concept of responsibility.

The absolute last thing I need you to prove is that you can kill. Any Puella Magi can kill. We have already killed.

It is our decisions, and the weight we make of our decisions, that separate us from monsters.

So we wait. We wait, you'll think all about how to stop Kaname, and I'll go kill witches. Like before and we'll act like nothing ever happened.

[She grips her fists even tighter. Her shoulders sag.]

Kaname and your wish are completely unrelated in any case; as I said, there is no real for this to change anything. The you I have known has always been you. If it was bothering you, you were right to say it. Can you even return to your previous state?

And as I've been saying for a while, I am more than fit enough to return to Witch hunting. It would be a relief.
